Wilhelm Heinrich's date and place of birth, date and place of death, parents' names, year of emigration and wife's name were all found in an entry for him in Walter Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen und Auswanderer aus dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach Nordamerika. This information was supported by Herman's 1900 and 1910 census listings which also supplied information about his children.

His approximate year and probable place of birth were known from the passenger list of the ship Kutsoff. Haseluenne parish records were checked and a baptismal entry found there for Herman Heinrich. His first wife's surname was found on the baptismal records of their two daughters born in Lotten. The child born in St. Louis was baptized at St. Joseph parish.
