That information allowed an entry for his family to be identified on the passenger list of the ship Leocadia which provided a probable place of birth. Werlte parish records were checked and a corresponding birth/bapt entry was found there for Johan Bernard, one year later than the year indicated by the death certificate.

His baptism entry was found in the parish records of Lengerich which supplied his parents' names. The child born in 1845 was baptized at St. Joseph.
