Maria's year of birth and the names of her parents and her siblings were known from the 1870 census. Even though their place of birth was noted as Baden, this was clearly the Ostolthoff family from Suttrup. All the names and ages correspond very closely to entries found for them in Walter Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen und Auswanderer aus dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach Nordamerika. Her date and place of birth and parents' names as noted above were taken from her entry in that book.

Bernard's year of birth and the names of his wife and children were known from the 1870 census. Even though their place of birth was noted as Baden, this was clearly the Ostolthoff family from Suttrup. All the names and ages are very close to entries found for them in Walter Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen und Auswanderer aus dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach Nordamerika. Bernard's date and place of birth, parents' names, wife's full name, marriage information and year of emigration were all taken from his entry in that book.
