Her year of birth was found in Walter Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen und Auswanderer aus dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach Nordamerika with the birth place as Gersten, in Lengerich parish. A birth record was found for her in that parish for in the year mentioned by Tenfelde and Marianna's parents' names were taken from that document. The Tenfelde entry gave her emigration year as 1842 and from that she and her husband were found on the passenger list of the ship Elaro.

Gerhard's year of birth was known from his age at death. His probable place of birth and parents' names were noted on an emigration index entry for someone with his name so Werlte parish records were cheked and a corresponding entry was found there for him. His parents' names on that record were the same as those of Willhelm Klumpe with whom he was living in 1870. His wife's name was noted in the St Clement cemetery listings.
