Ludwig is a confusing emigrant because, after initially emigrating in 1841, he returned to Germany at least twice for extended stays. Ludwig's parents' names were noted on his marriage record at the Old Cathedral in 1841 and his age was found on a passenger list earlier that same year which also gave his place of origin. Lengerich parish records were checked and a corresponding entry was found there for Ludwig. Information about his children was found in Walter Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen und Auswanderer aus dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach Nordamerika and in St Louis parish baptismal records.
